HDB pilots new open concept in October BTO exercise

Desmond Lee Minister of National Development announced that HDB is going to pilot a brand new layout concept with the Built-To-Order October exercise.

The “white flats” have a continuous living and sleeping space without any partition walls or beams. The first batch of white flats with 310 3- and 4-room units will be built at the Kallang Whampoa BTO Project.

According to HDB’s guidelines, the lack of internal partitions in white flats is factored into pricing. Homebuyers can opt for the new layout at the time of booking their flat.

It is possible to customize and reconfigure the HDB apartment layout as household requirements change.

Today, a four-room apartment has three bedrooms. Young couples who have no children might not need the three bedrooms. With a white flat, they can partition the space by using glass or furniture. If they decide to have children later, the space could be repurposed. Bedrooms can also be added.

If you want to renovate your new HDB flat, you can also save on costs as there is no need to remove walls.

Prior to now, the only “white plan”, or custom layout concept available for homebuyers was in the luxury market.

Far East Organization has developed a range of ultra-luxury properties under the Inessence brand, including Alba Boulevard Vue Skyline@Orchard Boulevard. These are located in Orchard Road’s most prestigious districts. The “white plans” concept let buyers personalize their units.

Sun says “Public housing flats which come with the White Plan can be a novel experience for some buyers”.

But she also says that the new design may not appeal to as many buyers in the long run.

Sun says that, despite the fact that non-structural construction walls are cheaper than structural ones, there will be no significant price difference.
